Thank You!
We are pleased that you are considering MARATHON, a roof coating system for preservating and waterproofing your existing roof. This product is designed to extend the life of flat or low-slope roofs and reduce their adverse impact on the environment.

MARATHON is a permanently flexible, highly durable membrane that will help reduce energy consumption and costs, while keeping the building interior cooler. By reflecting the sun’s heat from the roof surface, less heat is transferred through the roof substrate, which reduces air conditioning loads. MARATHON is also effective in preventing leaks and repairing those that currently exist.

Please take a moment to read these instructions carefully and become familiar with the product terms and tools needed to successfully coat and restore your existing roof.

NOTE: When in doubt, apply another coat! Additional material will help ensure that the membrane thickness is sufficient to bridge any hairline cracks that may develop in the substrate. Flat or low-sloped roofs are subjected to the damaging effects of the sun and weather every day, year in and year out. MARATHON is designed to be applied in several coats in order to achieve adequate film thickness and uniform coverage. This will also significantly increase the service life of your roof.

SAFETY FIRST: Before beginning any project, carefully read applicable product labels, as important health and safety information is available there.

When working on the roof of any building, always use extreme caution around electrical connections, overhead power lines or mechanical equipment.

Seek assistance when using ladders to gain access to the roof, especially when lifting heavy buckets or tools onto the roof surface. Children should not be allowed on the roof or under any ladder or scaffolding structures. Always use proper fall restraint equipment.

MARATHON Roof Coating Product Line

MARATHON TOPCOAT forms a highly reflective, permanently flexible membrane with outstanding weatherability and ultraviolet resistance. Reduces energy consumption by reflecting the sun’s heat.

MARATHON BASECOAT provides a high-build membrane prior to top coating. It achieves superior adhesion over metal, conventional built-up, modified bitumen, single-ply, concrete, board-stock, sprayed-in-place polyurethane foam and composite shingle roof substrates.

MARATHON ROOF PRIMER is excellent for increasing the adhesion of MARATHON BASECOAT. It also encapsulates and adheres reinforcement fabrics where required.

MARATHON BUTTERGRADE is ideally suited for sealing mechanical fasteners and horizontal seams on metal roofs, as well as around flashings, drains and protrusions. Excellent adhesion to asphaltic roofing, metal, concrete, wood, Hypalon® and polyurethane foam. May also be used for encapsulating MARATHON REINFORCING MESH or FABRIC.

MARATHON CLEANING CONCENTRATE is a biodegradable cleaning solution for metal, concrete, masonry, coated or uncoated roofs, decks and walls.

MARATHON SEAM REPAIR TAPE is self-adhering tape for use on seams, splits, transitions, protrusions, etc.. Easy to use over a wide range of substrates. Develops tenacious adhesion to metal, concrete, smooth masonry and glass. For detail areas; available in 2 inch (5 cm), 4 inch (10 cm) and 6 inch (15 cm) widths, each 50 feet (15 m) in length.

MARATHON ROOF FASTENER SEALS are an innovative method for preventing leaks, rust and backout of metal roof fasteners.

MARATHON REINFORCING FABRIC for large areas; 40 inch (1 m) width by 324 feet (99 m) length rolls designed to cover 1,000 square feet (93 m²) including a 2 inch (5 cm) overlap.

MARATHON REINFORCING MESH for detail areas; available in 4 inch (10 cm) and 6 inch (15 cm) wide rolls, each 300 feet (91 m) in length.

Step 1 - Preparation

Remove all loose gravel, leaves, dirt, dust and debris. Use a wire brush to remove all loose rust and prime these areas with good quality rust-inhibitive metal primer.
Any unsound areas in the roof deck, insulation or flashing must be repaired or replaced. Ensure that the roof deck has positive slope to drain. Tighten or replace loose fasteners.

Clean using MARATHON CLEANING CONCENTRATE and plenty of fresh water. Heavy deposits of dirt or contamination may require agitation with a stiff-bristle broom or brush. Thorough cleaning may require power washing the entire roof. Allow to dry completely before application of repair materials or coating products.

Step 2 - Repair / Reinforce

Brush on MARATHON BUTTERGRADE to fill splits, cracks, voids, and around all penetrations. Apply MARATHON SEAM REPAIR TAPE to all seams and cracks larger than 1/8 inch (3 mm). Apply a brush coat of MARATHON BASECOAT over reinforcement tape, extending one inch (2.5 cm) beyond tape on either side.

Long seams, such as those on a metal roof, should be reinforced using MARATHON SEAM REPAIR TAPE.

On metal roofs, all screw heads must be covered with MARATHON FASTENER CAPS or sealed with MARATHON BUTTERGRADE.

Step 3 - Coat

To achieve optimum bond of the MARATHON ROOF COATING over black asphaltic substrates, apply MARATHON ROOF PRIMER at a rate of 1 gallon per 100 square feet (.4 l/m²). This also helps prevent asphaltic bleed-through staining.

Apply a minimum of one coat of MARATHON BASECOAT, using airless spray or roller, at a rate of 1 to 2 gallon per 100 sq. ft. (.4 to .8 l/m²). Additional coats may be applied to increase film thickness, depending on the type of roof substrate and texture.

To reinforce heavily weathered areas, an additional coat of MARATHON ROOF PRIMER and MARATHON FABRIC may
be necessary.

Step 4 - Coat

Apply a minimum of one coat of MARATHON TOPCOAT, using airless spray or roller, at a rate of 100 sq. ft. per gallon (.4 l/m²). Each coat of MARATHON should be applied in a direction perpendicular to the previous coat to assure positive coverage.

The best time to apply these products is on a warm sunny day when there is no threat of rain or frost within 24 hours of application. Ideal application temperatures are between 50°F and 90°F (10° and 32°C).

Dry time is 4 to 6 hours, but will vary with temperature, humidity and application thickness. Be sure to allow ample drying time between coats.

Clean spills immediately with water before they dry. Clean tools and equipment with warm soapy water. Flush water from spray equipment with a light solvent prior to storage.
